Contemporary Arabic Literature: An Analysis of Naguib Mahfouz's Contributions to Modernism

Abstract

This study examines the contributions of Naguib Mahfouz, an Egyptian writ-er and Nobel laureate, to modernism in contemporary Arabic literature. It investigates his role in defining, challenging, and redefining literary trends in Arabic literature through a comprehensive analysis of his major works. A qualitative research method was applied, combining textual analysis of Mah-fouz's novels with extensive literature reviews of both primary and second-ary sources. This study also incorporates discourse analysis and comparative literature studies to further understand the distinctive features of Mahfouz's writings and his influence on Arabic modernism. The analysis uncovers Mah-fouz's unique narrative style, characterized by a blend of social realism and philosophical existentialism, a cornerstone of Arabic modernism. His themes predominantly revolve around social issues, class struggles, and the human existential quest. Mahfouz also introduced narrative techniques, such as stream of consciousness and multiple perspectives, previously unfamiliar in Arabic literature. The results indicate that Mahfouz played a critical role in shaping Arabic modernism, with his works symbolizing a bridge between traditional Arabic literature and the modern era. His influence extended be-yond the borders of Egypt and influenced Arabic literature on a larger scale. His narrative styles and thematic explorations have proven to be an endur-ing source of inspiration for contemporary Arabic writers. Naguib Mahfouz's contributions to modernism in contemporary Arabic literature are significant and enduring. His innovative narrative techniques, combined with a distinct thematic focus, broadened the landscape of Arabic literature, contributing to its modernization. The findings provide a comprehensive understanding of Mahfouz's place within the framework of modern Arabic literature and establish a solid foundation for future research into the impact of his works on the Arab literary world.
